Combine a typical Indian River winter featuring 100 inches of snow with hundreds of miles of groomed trails and you have perfect snowmobiling conditions.

Snowmobiling the North Central State Trail

Indian River sits at the center of the North Central State Trail, a track that was once a railroad. The 62-mile run between Mackinaw City and Gaylord links to other trails connecting Lake Michigan to the west and Lake Huron to the east.

Between December 1 and March 31, snowmobilers can ride through the beautiful woodlands and by the west shoreline of Mullett Lake on the North Central State Trail. The groomed trail has speed limits and enforced restricted hours on sections of the trail. Check out the North Central State Trail map here.

Black Mountain Recreation Area

With routes from Cheboygan to Millersburg and throughout the Black Mountain Recreation Area, you’ll have the opportunity to ride more than 80 miles of groomed trail. Be sure to stay on designated snowmobiles trails.

Equestrians are also welcome to use the snowmobile trails from April through November. You’ll find miles of old two-track roads and fire lines. Horses must stay on established roads and paths.

Indian River Snowmobile Grooming Club

The Indian River Snowmobile Grooming Club maintains 56 miles of trails that run through the Northwest Lower Lake Effect Snow Belt. The area tends to have a greater-than-average snowfall than most. From the old rail grade alongside the Sturgeon River to the winding hardwood hills to the west, it is one of the most scenic trails in Northern Michigan. The team grooms six days a week when weather permits. Experienced volunteer operators keep the trails in peak shape at all times.
